एक अमेरिकी परोपकारी, श्री हेनरी फिप्स से 30,000 पाउंड के अनुदान के साथ पूसा (बिहार) में 1905 में शुरू हुआ।
संस्थान कृषि अनुसंधान संस्थान ( कृषि ), जो पांच विभागों मैं था, कृषि, पशु प्रजनन , रसायन विज्ञान, वनस्पति विज्ञान और आर्थिक मिकॉलजी के साथ कार्य के रूप में जाना जाता था। जीवाणु इकाई 1907 में जोड़ा गया है
संस्थान का नाम 1911 में Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research में बदल गया था और 1919 में इसे Imperial Agricultural Research Institute बदल दिया गया था।
स्वतंत्रता के बाद संस्थान Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) के रूप में नाम दिया गया है ।
वर्ष 1958 में एक डीम्ड विश्वविद्यालय का दर्जा प्राप्त किया। जो हरित क्रांति कि भारतीयों के लाखों लोगों के चेहरे पर मुस्कान लाया
